The chase takes him past placid villages and through sprawling cities, following the devastation the murderer leaves in his wake. He struggles to contain a fire at the locks, fights off an attempted boarding, rescues kidnapped animals, and saves many others from meeting Fred’s fate. Events come to a head at a detective convention by the mouth of the river. The killer murders one of the guests and assumes their identity, intending to wipe out every detective in a single stroke. Only Harvey, arriving late in his battered narrowboat, can stop this hideous crime from taking place.
