    Product Description -
    Live At Koniz Castle was recorded at the Kulturhof in the grounds of Koniz Castle, Switzerland, on March 25 2023, and not, contrary to appearance, in Kyla and Danny's living room at home in Mossley. It's rare to achieve intimacy and connect with a roomful of strangers, but such is the accomplishment of Live At Koniz Castle. Then, at other moments, Kyla comes across as an untrammelled force of nature. A live album, which asserts the integrity of the concert experience in a package with the architectonic unity of a work of art and allows for replay, offers the best of all possible worlds.

    The hypnotic force of Kyla's voice is in the best tradition of Afro-American music, albeit tinged with Lancashire drollery and a Lancashire accent. To hear the singer in full flight – as in the long drawn-out, purgative paaaaiiiiiin on the bridge of 'Pain & Glory' – is to be convinced that Kyla is the greatest soul singer Britain has ever produced.

    The songwriting is important. It affirms blues music as a living art-form and carves an original identity from the rock-face of tradition. A ratio of two covers to 14 originals seems about right. These songs sometimes draw on roleplay. Kyla is a consummate actress and the seductive 'lady bountiful' of 'In the Morning' falls within range of her stock of female archetypes. She can also admit the listener into her own life, in songs touched by lived experience, or inspired by characters and people she has known. 'Sensitive Soul' and 'Bluesman's Child' fit into this category. Of the covers, Kyla's classic interpretation of 'Hallelujah' blows every other version out of the water. If this seems a large claim, you are invited to put it to the test. 

    A four-piece with singer plus guitar, bass and drums, perhaps taking turns at the wheel, makes for a very efficient, roadworthy unit. Instrumentally, Kyla's band operates within blues rock conventions. There is one point of departure: whenever Kyla tootles on her flute, the sound transports back to the fife and drum atavism of the Como Drum Band from Mississippi, and, beyond that, to something essentially rootsy and African. Connoisseurs of blues guitar may wish to note Paul Farr's capacity to channel the expressive force of the immortals Peter Green and Jimi Hendrix, and his ability to match the intensity of Kyla's voice. Drummer Mark Warburton and bassist Danny Blomeley synchronise the pitch of intensity in perfect calibration, holding back or surging forward with deceptive ease.
     
    On the whole, Kyla and crew achieve a nice balance between sensitivity and ferocity.
